We’ve been pleasantly busy this week with our long distance visitors. First it was Auntie Susie and then a couple of nights ago Aunt Carolyn and Uncle E drove in to Ottawa (en route to Halifax) for a visit. Seeing as they live abroad (Uganda and East Timor) this is the first time they’ve met their little nephew. And they came bearing so many gifts! Aunt C generously spoiled us with all her wares from abroad. So for today, Niko has a Mama decked out in something out of the norm: a long and flowy colourful sundress, three pink bangles made from animal horn, a pair of pink hooped earrings made from bone, and a thick beaded necklace.

Niko seems to like the new look; I just have to remember to be aware of what’s dangling from my ears. Otherwise, I could end up in a painful situation as his curious (check out his curiosity in the bottom pic) little hands grab hold of the hoops. And already he’s reached for them, and thankfully I was aware. So hopefully I can keep that up. Niko was also spoiled with a really cool silhouetted elephant painting, as well as two little jungle finger puppets, and an elephant that pops out of a cone (which actually reminds of a toy that fascinated me as a child).

Niko was so excited to have finally met all three of his cousins: Audra, Claire and John Russell (as well as his Aunt Marion and Uncle John Paul). As soon as the cuzzies got to Ottawa, they went up to see little sleeping Niko and gave him lots of hugs and loves and each took a turn holding him: even John Russell who is only two years old got in the action and held his little cuz!

They were here in town for an extended weekend helping to celebrate for the Olympic Torch Relay, and we had lots of time to hang out and for Niko to get to know all three of them! Also, Niko wrote a little note and asked Aunt Marion and Uncle JP to be his Godparents and they said yes! So, who knows when the baptism will be, but probably sometime within the next few months.

When I was in Grade 3 my class put on a performance of the Nativity Story.  I was cast as Mary, probably for the sole reason that I had a baby brother that could play Jesus.  My brother Greg was born on September 14th, so he was about three months old when he starred in the play.  Seeing as Niko was born on September 15th – from birth to their first December – that pretty much puts them at the same age.

Maybe it’s because I am a new parent and Gregory was the fourth born, but I can’t imagine putting my little guy in the hands of an eight year old at the front of an auditorium, where I would have no control over what could happen to him.  I mean, he could start to cry, or get hungry, or a million other things! Maybe this is just a hint of what I have to look forward to, when we have more kids: a more relaxed attitude about their schedule and how and when they are handled. So while Niko won’t be starring in any operetta’s this year, who knows what the future holds for his sibs!

Note: In the picture below you can see a grown up pic of what was once Baby Jesus.  Yes, this is Uncle Greg in all his hairy glory, and while his hair certainly fits the Jesus role, you can clearly see, he can’t walk on water! I don’t know, but I think Mrs. Roberts, my Grade 3 teacher, may have had the casting all wrong… 🙂

Niko is so happy that he will be having a new cousin: Ciocia Ola is pregnant and she and Uncle Bruce are having a little girl this coming May! Niko can’t wait to meet her and welcome her to the family!
