Hand-me-downs. A smaller room. Fewer photos. Waa. Waa. Waa.

All these things plus many more are the oft heard laments of the second born. And will little Stella suffer these injustices? Let’s see… Hand-me-downs? Not even a month old and she’s already in them! A smaller room? A little bigger than half the size of Niko’s… (But to be fair, lovingly and freshly decorated though!) Fewer photos? Yet to be determined.

When Niko was born I toyed with the idea of arranging for professional newborn pics. Borys convinced me my amateur photography skills were adequate, and with my ego suitably stroked I believed him. Little Niko was then left to my own devices and the best I could do with the camera I had. And what did we end up with? A Newborn-Hugh-Heffner of sorts: yes, little Niko became memorialized as a newborn splayed out on lambskin. Lucky little guy!

Anyway, when I was pregnant with Stella I firmly decided that she would be the recipient of real professional pictures. After some internet research I settled on a photographer (Baby and Belly Photography) and upon her birth scheduled an appointment. Yesterday I got the first set of proofs via email and am now happy to share the end the results here.

So yes, while she can lament some things about being the second born. There are other things that only the second born can enjoy: love from a big brother AND in this case, a professional photo shoot!

I remember the first few times Niko smiled – it was so heartwarming (and still is)! Thankfully, those smiles are daily occurrences these days, many times over. I also remember trying to capture that first grin in pictures – it was so challenging. And now, we catch him smiling in photos all the time.

But since he’s gotten tooth number one and tooth numero deux, it’s been difficult getting those elusive pearly whites on camera. Perhaps it’s due to the sheer size of them: they’re just a few millimeters really. Anyway, the attempts to get them in pictures ended a couple of days ago when I finally (and accidentally) captured that toothy little grin with my SLR. But how could he resist smiling and showing off those teeth when he was in such good company? 🙂

Lately I have been contemplating getting professinal pictures of Niko.  I mean each day he is only getting older and older and bigger and bigger, and it is probably a good idea to capture him on camera as he grows.  Then I had a brainwave: why not try to take the pictures myself! Am I a professional photographer? No, and far from it, but I do like to take pictures and Borys does have an SLR Nikon camera, so why not give it a whirl.  Well, after a short tutorial from Borys, I was on my way.  With Niko as my model I went to town, and over a hundred pictures later I was done! Out of that 100 or so pics, I think I did catch a few cute ones for the Christmas card.
