After Niko was born I was in a double hospital room with another mom. Even though we were separated by a curtain, she was only about four feet away and I could hear everything that was going on on her side. So while she had friends and family coming in for visits to meet her little baby, I had my Baby in a Camera.

Niko was in the NICU and unable to leave, and the only way I could physically see him was if I trekked on down to the Intensive Care Unit (which I did many times). But while this neighbour mom cooed and gooed over her newborn, I was quietly looking at my little babe in the digital camera. (And, truth be told, shedding a few tears over the whole situation. I mean it wasn’t ideal, and right after you give birth there are just all those hormones and emotions racing through your body). Anyway, that situation didn’t last long because the next day I was moved to a private room, and found it much easier to have my Baby in a Camera in the privacy of my own room.

When I went away last weekend, I snapped some pics of Niko before leaving so that I could bring my Baby in a Camera on the road with me. The difference this time was that these images only invoked feelings of joy when I looked at them. Plus it gave me a chance to show him off to my pals.

Note: These pics are the now and then versions of my Baby in a Camera.

Ciocia Ola is in town and spoiling Niko to the max: giving him lots of loves and hugs and laughs, and he is loving every minute of it! She has already taken so many pictures and videos that the memory card on her camera is full! So, we’re going to save them on our computer for now, so she can continue to document her stay here in Ottawa.

Ola was even here for The Great Christmas Tree Debacle of 2009. This happened when after trimming the whole tree: lights, garland, and decorations, we realized – after a day or so – that we had not cut off the base of the tree. Now, who knew that you are to tend to a Christmas tree just as you would a dozen roses: by cutting off the base so that it can absorb more water? Well, we certainly didn’t know this, or remember about it, until we were troubleshooting as to why our tree was dropping needles like crazy and its basin of water was still full. Oh, the base! So, an hour later we had our tree back and good to go.  And wasn’t that hour of “redecking the halls”, filled with so much joy? Yeah, right! Undecorating a tree, so you can lay it down and saw off the base in your living room, with a spunky and curious poodle helping out, doesn’t make for the most pleasant of evenings. 🙂 But we survived it, and redecorated, and now our tree is absorbing water like the best of them, and even has some presents underneath it!

Lately I have been contemplating getting professinal pictures of Niko.  I mean each day he is only getting older and older and bigger and bigger, and it is probably a good idea to capture him on camera as he grows.  Then I had a brainwave: why not try to take the pictures myself! Am I a professional photographer? No, and far from it, but I do like to take pictures and Borys does have an SLR Nikon camera, so why not give it a whirl.  Well, after a short tutorial from Borys, I was on my way.  With Niko as my model I went to town, and over a hundred pictures later I was done! Out of that 100 or so pics, I think I did catch a few cute ones for the Christmas card.

In the past few days Niko has been smiling a lot more.  His smile is so adorable and heartwarming! His whole face seems to light up and his eyes go into the shape of little crescent moons.  I love it, but catching it on camera is proving difficult.
