Parenting 2.0

Yesterday was a night out in Mtl for Auntie H and Uncle G, and a slumber party at Chez Niko for Little Lena. You know, when I was pregnant I really hoped for twins (and I still do). However, once I had Little N I realized how challenging it would have been to look after two babies at the same time, especially when parenting was so new to me.

Anyway, last night and this morning, I got a taste of what twins might have been like. And let me tell you, two little monkeys really keep me on my toes. Even though Lena was a perfect house guest and overall maintained her usual jovial spirits, the challenging part was just orchestrating double feeding, double bathing, double diapering, etc. You get the picture.

Of course, I had to document Lena’s stay with just a few pictures. As I mentioned briefly in one of my previous posts, Niko has developed a bit of a fake smile for the camera, and apparently so has Lena. As soon as they realized it was picture time, they squinted their eyes and got this really cheesy smile on their faces. (However, maybe the squinty eyes just come from lessons learned in their short life: that the dang camera flash sure is bright.) In the pics below I caught Lena hamming it up in the first photo and Niko in the second. What a pair of monsters cuties.

We’ve discovered something wonderful: a free babysitter, who we utterly trust and is happy to watch over our babe, while Borys and I get to go out on a date! I’ve mentioned before, that since the birth of our lovely little Niko Borys and I have only had two dates! Yes, two dates. Not a lot for eight months, but I guess this is somewhat to be expected when you’ve got a baby and are first time parents.

Anyway, last night we had Dziadzio over for dinner, then we put Niko to bed and headed out to the movies. These days, once Niko goes to bed, he’s TKO ’til at least after midnight (but usually until about 5 am – sweet little angel that he is), which means we’re safe to leave him and don’t really have to worry that he’ll wake up. Of course we left a bottle just in case, and our cell phone, which we kept on vibrate in our pockets. But the night went off without a hitch. We had a date, Dziadzio babysat (aka watched TV) and Niko slept all the while. I think this could the beginning of a beautiful new tradition!

Note: Pics below are Niko giving me my first Mother’s Day card ever: sweet, thoughtful, baby. And I didn’t even know he knew how to shop!

We’re having a what? A date! A what? A date night!

Oh yeah, I think I remember what those are, but it’s a been a while. It’s all coming back to me now. Yes, a date. One of those things where Borys and I go out together, just the two of us, where we do something fun, like eating out or going to the movies, where we have some time together, alone, sans baby, sans poodle. Yes a date. I remember what those are, and they’re a good thing! It’s all about balance, right?

Gramma’s in town and that means Borys and I can head out on the town. Well, if you count eating out at a nearby restaurant and then going to Chapters, as “going out on the town”, then yes, going out on the town is what we are doing. Borys and I have only had one date since the birth of our lovely little baby boy (and that was also courtesy of Gramma’s babysitting service), so this night has been a long time coming. Just think about how many dates we could go on if she actually lived in Ottawa… But then again, maybe that’s why she doesn’t. 🙂
