Her Light Shines On

Posted on: November 1, 2009

Babcia's Light

Today is All Saints Day, and November 2009 also marks the 20th year since Niko’s babcia passed away.  Each year on All Saints Day we visit her grave site and take time to remember.  Although I never met Margaret (Borys and Ola’s’ mom, Niko’s babcia, Andrew’s wife, my mother-in-law), I almost feel like I knew her, as she is alive and well within the memories of her family.  It is a Polish, or perhaps European tradition to visit the graves of loved ones on All Saint’s Day.  Things I know about Margaret are that she was a kind, gentle and friendly soul, with a passion for creativity; she was a fashion designer in Poland and this is how she met Andrew (at that time he was a model).

Upon arriving at her tombstone today there was already a candle burning (see picture above).  This means that someone else visited her site today: 20 years after the fact, this speaks volumes about the impact she had on others.  20 years later, a friend still visits, and leaves a light burning for her.
